Questions drivers ask

How much does a rideshare driver keep from $1,500 in fares?

In the example above, about $699.09 before income tax, after a 25% service fee, GST, $250 rent, fuel and tolls. The biggest levers are the rent, the car's fuel use and how many kilometres you drive empty.

Do I have to register for GST to drive for Uber?

Yes. The ATO requires ride-sourcing drivers to register for GST before their first trip, whatever they earn. You pay GST on fares and claim credits on the GST in your costs.

Can I drive for Uber on P-plates?

Not with passengers: Uber needs a full licence. A green P2 licence can be used for Uber Eats deliveries by car in Victoria. See P-plate car rental.

How the calculation works

  1. Service fee = fares × your fee %. Uber says its variable service fee aims to stay close to 25% (Uber help); the fee on your statement is the one to use.
  2. GST: ride-sourcing drivers must register for GST before their first trip, whatever they earn (ATO). GST owed is 1/11 of fares, less the GST credits in the service fee, fuel and tolls (assumed GST-inclusive). Rent credits are not counted.
  3. Fuel = kilometres × L/100km ÷ 100 × price per litre.
  4. Profit = fares + tips − service fee − net GST − rent − fuel − tolls − other costs. Income tax comes off later, depending on your whole-year income.
  5. Break-even is the weekly fares at which profit is zero, net of the same GST credits.

Before you rent for rideshare

In Victoria, UberX cars must be 15 years old or less, have 4 doors, seat 4–7 passengers and be ANCAP 5-star rated or exempt (Uber vehicle requirements). Uber also asks drivers for a full licence held for at least 6 months, so P-platers can't drive for Uber, though they can rent from us for other use. See rideshare cars for what's available and the newest hybrids first.
