Can P-platers rent a car in Victoria?

Yes. No law stops a provisional driver from hiring a car: each rental company decides whether to accept P-plates. We accept red and green P-plates, full Australian licences and overseas licences. Our minimum driver age is 18. Bring your physical licence card; we check the front and back at pickup.

Red or green Ps: what changes on the road

For renting from us, nothing: both are accepted. On the road, P1 (red) drivers can't carry more than one passenger aged 16 to under 22 (a spouse or domestic partner, a sibling or a step-sibling doesn't count), and can't tow unless an exception applies. P2 (green) drivers have neither restriction. All P-platers must have zero alcohol and must not use a phone while driving.

Which cars P-platers can drive

Victoria bans probationary drivers from probationary prohibited vehicles: cars rated "banned" in the probationary vehicle database, cars with more than 130 kW per tonne, and cars with performance modifications. Before pickup, ask us for the exact make, model and variant and check it in the database. Most of our cars are automatic, and every listing shows the transmission, so check it if you have an A condition on your licence.

Working on your Ps

Carrying Uber or DiDi passengers needs a full licence, so neither red nor green Ps qualify for rideshare. For delivery, Uber accepts a green P2 licence for car deliveries in Victoria, but not a red P1 (Uber's rules, checked 3 October 2026). Courier and parcel work is allowed in our vans, not our cars. See our rideshare cars and van hire pages.

P-plate car rental: your questions

Anything else, ask us on WhatsApp or call 0432 639 096.

Can I rent a car on red P-plates?

Yes. Red (P1) and green (P2) P-plates are both accepted, from age 18. On red Ps you can carry only one passenger aged 16 to under 22, with family exceptions.

Is there a young-driver or P-plate surcharge?

No. Rent, bond and excess are the same for every driver from 18, on red Ps, green Ps or a full licence. Each listing shows its weekly rent and bond; you pay your own fuel, tolls, parking and fines.

Can I drive for Uber on my Ps?

Not with passengers: Uber and DiDi need a full licence. Uber accepts green P2 licences for car deliveries in Victoria, but not red P1.

How long can I rent for?

The minimum is one month, billed weekly in advance. After that the rental continues week by week until you give 2 weeks' notice.
