Fuel figures: 6.4 L/100km combined (Yaris 1.3L and 1.5L 4-speed auto, listed from 2016, Green Vehicle Guide); 4.9 L/100km for the 1.5L CVT released 2020. The Japanese-market Vitz is not rated in Australia

Good for
  • Short commutes
  • New drivers
  • Tight parking

A simple car for everyday trips

The petrol Yaris is about as straightforward as cars get. It has a small four-cylinder engine in the older generation and a conventional automatic, light steering and good outward vision. If your week is a commute to a job in Dandenong or Clayton plus shopping and a few social trips, it does all of that without the size or cost of a larger car.

Trim names in the fleet

Fleet listings carry trim names such as YR, Xs and RS after the model name; equipment varies by trim and year, so check the individual listing. The Toyota Vitz, including the Vitz Jewela, is the Japanese-market version: Toyota's own newsroom describes Yaris as the name of the Vitz outside Japan. Vitz cars were imported rather than sold new here, so they have no Green Vehicle Guide rating.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the Yaris 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre four-cylinder with the four-speed automatic, listed from 2016, at 6.4 L/100km combined. The newer-generation Yaris 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol with a CVT, released in 2020, is listed at 4.9. These Yaris variants are listed on regular 91 RON unleaded.

Practical points

  • Seats: five belts, best for two adults plus children in the back.
  • Gearbox: the older four-speed automatic is simple but has fewer ratios than newer cars, so it revs more at freeway speed.

Weekly rent and bond are shown on each listing. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.

Renting a Toyota Yaris: questions

Is a Toyota Vitz the same car as a Yaris?

Yes, in the sense that Vitz is the Japanese-market name. Toyota's newsroom describes Yaris as the name of the Vitz outside Japan. Vitz cars in Australia are imports, so equipment, labels and the fuel rating can differ from Australian-delivered Yaris cars.

How much fuel does a petrol Yaris use?

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the 2016-on Yaris 1.3L and 1.5L four-speed automatics at 6.4 L/100km combined, and the 2020 1.5L CVT at 4.9 L/100km.

Is the petrol Yaris the same as the Yaris Hybrid?

No. The petrol Yaris has a conventional engine and automatic. The Yaris Hybrid, released in 2020, is listed at 3.3 L/100km combined against 6.4 for the 2016-on petrol automatics, and has its own page.
