What the Aqua is

Toyota launched the Aqua in Japan in 2011 and sold the same compact hybrid in other markets as the Prius c; Toyota's own sales tally for the Aqua includes Prius c units. The Aqua cars in the fleet are Japanese-market imports, so you may find a Japanese-language screen or labels, and features can differ from an Australian-delivered Prius c. Toyota launched an all-new second-generation Aqua in Japan in 2021.

Running costs

Because the Aqua was not sold new in Australia, it does not have a Green Vehicle Guide rating. The closest Australian equivalent, the Prius c with its 1.5-litre hybrid system, is listed at 3.9 L/100km combined. That gives a fair idea of the class of fuel use to expect, but it is not an official figure for the Aqua itself.

Practical points

  • Size: a light hatch with five seatbelts. It is comfortable for the driver and one passenger, and adequate for short trips with people in the back.
  • Driving it: it moves off quietly on electric power at low speed, and the petrol engine starts and stops automatically. There is no plug; it is a self-charging hybrid.
  • Imported car checks: if the screen or labels are in Japanese, take a few minutes at pickup to find the warning lights, climate controls and radio before you drive off.

Renting one

Each Aqua listing shows its year, weekly rent and bond. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.

What the weekly rent covers

In the weekly rent

  • Insurance on the vehicle. The cover, excess and exclusions are in the insurance documents you get with your booking.

You pay separately

  • Fuel. Return it at the level you collected it.
  • Tolls, parking and fines during your hire.
  • Damage up to the insurance excess.
  • A refundable security bond, back within 30 days of return with any deduction itemised.

Renting a Toyota Aqua Hybrid: questions

Is the Toyota Aqua the same as a Prius c?

The first-generation Aqua was sold outside Japan as the Prius c, and Toyota counts Prius c sales within its Aqua totals. Aqua cars here are Japanese-market imports, so some equipment and labelling differ.

What fuel economy should I expect from an Aqua?

There is no official Australian figure for the Aqua. The Australian-delivered Prius c is rated at 3.9 L/100km combined in the Green Vehicle Guide, which is a useful guide to the class of fuel use.

Can I use an imported Aqua for Uber in Melbourne?

Uber's Melbourne UberX requirements include an ANCAP 5-star rating. Japanese-market imports may not carry an ANCAP rating, so check with Uber about the specific car before you rely on it for rideshare.
