Where the Corolla Hybrid makes sense

The Corolla Hybrid is smaller than a Camry, which makes it easier to park in Richmond side streets or a crowded shopping-centre car park, while still seating five. For rideshare, food delivery or a long daily commute from the south-east, the hybrid system does most of its saving in the slow traffic that Melbourne drivers know well.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the Corolla hybrid hatch released in 2018 at 4.2 L/100km combined, and the 2019 hybrid sedan at 3.5 L/100km. The updated hybrid released in 2022 is listed at 4.0 L/100km for the hatch and 3.9 for the sedan. These are laboratory results, useful for comparing cars rather than predicting your exact fuel bill.

About the Corolla Axio Hybrid

The Corolla Axio is the name Toyota used in Japan for its Corolla sedan. Toyota launched the Axio hybrid in Japan in 2013 with a 1.5-litre hybrid system, smaller than the 1.8-litre unit in the Australian Corolla Hybrid. Because it was not sold new here, it has no Green Vehicle Guide rating, and its controls and manuals may carry Japanese-market details.

Practical points

  • Hatch or sedan: the hatch is shorter and easier to park; the sedan has a separate boot that keeps luggage out of sight.
  • No charging needed: it is a self-charging hybrid that runs on petrol.
  • Rear seat: fine for two adults, tighter than a Camry for three.

Each listing shows the car's body style, year, weekly rent and bond. We accept P-plates for the rental itself, and pickup is in Dandenong South.

Renting a Toyota Corolla Hybrid: questions

Is the Corolla Axio Hybrid the same as the Australian Corolla Hybrid?

No. The Axio is a Japanese-market Corolla sedan. Toyota launched its hybrid version in Japan in 2013 with a 1.5-litre hybrid system, whereas the Australian Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-litre system. The Axio has no Australian Green Vehicle Guide fuel rating.

What is the official fuel figure for the Corolla Hybrid?

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the 2018-released hybrid hatch at 4.2 L/100km combined, the 2019 hybrid sedan at 3.5 and the 2022-released hatch and sedan at 4.0 and 3.9.

Can I use a Corolla Hybrid for Uber?

Uber's Melbourne UberX requirements include an ANCAP 5-star rating, four doors, seating for four passengers and an age of no more than 15 years by year of manufacture. Eligibility depends on the specific car, and imported Japanese-market cars such as the Axio may not carry an ANCAP rating, so check with Uber first.
