What the Yaris Hybrid is good at

The Yaris is a light car, and the hybrid version is at its best in short, slow, repetitive driving: inner-suburb deliveries, school runs, trips between the train station and work. That is where the hybrid system recovers the most energy from braking, and the car's small size makes kerbside and shopping-centre parking easier.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the Yaris hybrid hatch released in 2020 at 3.3 L/100km combined, the lowest figure of any car on this site. The version released in 2026 is listed at 3.5. As with any official figure, it comes from a laboratory test, so use it to compare cars rather than to budget to the cent.

Practical points

  • Space: five seatbelts, but this is a small car. Rear legroom suits children or short trips for adults, and the boot holds shopping or a carry-on case or two rather than a family holiday's luggage.
  • Driving it: the hybrid can move off on electric power and the engine starts and stops on its own. The three-cylinder engine has a distinctive note when working hard.
  • Freeways: it copes with the Monash or the Ring Road, though it is less relaxed at 100 km/h than a mid-size car.

Renting one

Listings below show the year, weekly rent and bond for each Yaris Hybrid. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.

Renting a Toyota Yaris Hybrid: questions

What fuel economy does the Yaris Hybrid get?

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the 2020-released Yaris hybrid at 3.3 L/100km combined and the 2026-released version at 3.5 L/100km.

Is the Yaris Hybrid big enough for rideshare?

It has four doors and five seats, but adult passengers will find the back seat small. Uber's Melbourne UberX rules also require an ANCAP 5-star rating and an age of no more than 15 years by year of manufacture, so confirm the specific car with Uber.

Is the Yaris Hybrid the same as the Yaris Cross?

No. The Yaris Cross is a small SUV with a raised body and an optional AWD hybrid. The Yaris Hybrid is the lower, lighter hatch.
