A small car with a conventional automatic

The Mazda 3 uses a traditional six-speed automatic in recent generations rather than a CVT, which some drivers prefer for its more direct feel. It is a comfortable commuter for the drive into the city from the south-east, and the sedan's separate boot keeps bags out of sight when you park.

Running costs by generation

Because the fleet includes Mazda 3s of different ages, the generation matters more than usual. The Green Vehicle Guide lists:

  • 2019-on: 2.0-litre six-speed automatic at 6.2 L/100km combined for the hatch and 6.1 for the sedan.
  • 2014–2019: 2.0-litre six-speed automatic at 5.8 L/100km for the hatch.
  • 2009–2013: 2.0-litre five-speed automatic at 8.2 L/100km.

The 2019-on car was also sold with a 2.5-litre engine, listed at 6.6 L/100km for the automatic hatch and 6.5 for the sedan. These are laboratory figures and all are listed on regular 91 RON unleaded. For context, the 2019-on 2.0-litre hatch sits between the 2018-on Corolla 2.0-litre (6.0) and the i30 2.0-litre hatch (7.4). Check the year on each listing.

Practical points

  • Hatch or sedan: both seat five; the Green Vehicle Guide rates the sedan 0.1 L/100km lower than the hatch in the 2019-on generation.
  • Older cars and rideshare: Uber's Melbourne page limits UberX cars to no more than 15 years old by year of manufacture, so an older Mazda 3 may not qualify. It also requires an ANCAP 5-star rating.

Each listing shows the car's year, body style, weekly rent and bond. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.

Renting a Mazda 3: questions

How much fuel does a Mazda 3 use?

It depends on the generation. The Green Vehicle Guide lists the 2019-on 2.0L automatic hatch at 6.2 L/100km combined, the 2014–2019 version at 5.8 and the 2009–2013 2.0L automatic at 8.2.

Can an older Mazda 3 be used for Uber?

Uber's Melbourne UberX requirements say the car must be no more than 15 years old by year of manufacture and ANCAP 5-star rated. A car from 2009 or 2010 is already outside that age limit.

Is the Mazda 3 a CVT?

No. The generations listed here use conventional automatics: five-speed in the 2009–2013 car and six-speed from 2014.
