A small sedan rather than a hatch
The City is a light car with a separate sedan boot behind the rear seat rather than a hatchback tailgate. For many renters that is the main appeal: luggage, work gear or shopping stays out of sight in the boot, which matters when you leave the car parked at a train station or on the street overnight.
Running costs
The Green Vehicle Guide lists the City VTi 1.5-litre with the CVT automatic, released in 2017, at 5.8 L/100km combined, and the VTi-L at 5.9. The earlier City VTi automatic, listed from 2014, is rated at 5.7. All are listed on regular 91 RON unleaded, which keeps the cost per fill down.
Practical points
- Engine: the 1.5-litre is adequate around town and on the freeway with one or two people aboard; it works harder with a full load or up long hills such as those in the Dandenong Ranges.
- Seats: five, with space best suited to two adults in the back.
- Boot shape: a sedan boot keeps things secure, but its opening is smaller than a hatchback's tailgate. For bulky items such as a pram or flat-pack furniture, the Honda Jazz hatch is the easier choice.
- Rideshare: any rideshare use depends on the specific car meeting Uber's current Melbourne requirements, including the ANCAP 5-star rating and the 15-year age limit for UberX.
