An older, straightforward sedan

The Lancer in this generation is a simple car by current standards: a non-turbo 2.0-litre engine, a CVT automatic and a sedan boot. For many renters that is fine. It does the commute, the shopping and the weekend visit without anything to learn, and its sedan boot is useful for work gear.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the Lancer ES 2.0-litre CVT sedan, listed 2015–2017, at 7.2 L/100km combined, and the 17MY ES Sport CVT at 7.4. The earlier CJ Lancer ES CVT sedan, listed from 2013, is also rated at 7.2. All are listed on regular 91 RON unleaded. That is higher than a modern small car or a hybrid, so if you drive long distances every day, compare the weekly fuel cost as well as the rent.

Practical points

  • Trim names: ES and ES Sport differ in equipment. The Green Vehicle Guide lists both with the same 2.0-litre engine and CVT automatic.
  • Seats: five, with a rear seat that suits two adults.
  • Rideshare: Uber's Melbourne UberX requirements include a maximum age of 15 years by year of manufacture and an ANCAP 5-star rating, and Uber Comfort requires a car built within the last seven years. Check the car's year with Uber.

Renting one

Weekly rent and bond for each Lancer, including Lancer ES cars, are on the listing. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.
