A family SUV with a large cargo area

The X-Trail is sized between small SUVs like the Corolla Cross and large seven-seaters like the Kluger. It has a big, square cargo area that suits prams, sports gear and luggage for a trip up to the Yarra Valley or down to the Mornington Peninsula, and a raised driving position that many people find comfortable on longer drives.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the X-Trail 2.5-litre petrol CVT with two-wheel drive and five seats, listed from 2014, at 7.9 L/100km combined; the seven-seat version is rated at 8.1. The current generation released in 2022 is listed at 7.4 for the 2.5-litre 2WD and 7.8 for the 4WD. These versions are listed on regular 91 RON unleaded.

Practical points

  • Seats: most X-Trails are five-seaters. Seven-seat versions exist, so check the listing if you need the extra row.
  • 2WD or 4WD: 4WD versions offer extra grip on gravel or wet tracks. For city and suburban driving, 2WD is all you need.
  • e-POWER: the current X-Trail is also sold as an e-POWER hybrid, released in 2022 and listed at 6.1 L/100km. If your listing says e-POWER, that figure applies instead.
  • Rideshare: any use for rideshare depends on the car meeting Uber's current Melbourne requirements, including the ANCAP 5-star rating and the 15-year age limit for UberX.

Renting one

Each X-Trail listing shows the year, seats, weekly rent and bond. We accept P-plates for the rental itself (Uber asks its drivers for a full licence held 6 months), and pickup is from Dandenong South.

Renting a Nissan X-Trail: questions

How many seats does an X-Trail have?

Most have five. Seven-seat versions were also sold, and the Green Vehicle Guide lists both. Each listing shows the seat count.

What fuel economy does the X-Trail get?

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the 2014–2022 X-Trail 2.5L 2WD five-seater at 7.9 L/100km combined and the 2022-released 2.5L 2WD at 7.4 L/100km.

Do I need the 4WD version?

Not for normal Melbourne driving. 4WD helps on unsealed roads and in slippery conditions, and the Green Vehicle Guide rates it slightly higher on fuel.
