What people use a HiAce for

A weekly HiAce rental covers jobs a ute or wagon cannot: parcel and courier runs, carrying tools and materials to sites around the south-east, flat moves, and market or event stock. The load area is enclosed and lockable, and the sliding side door makes loading at the kerb easier than through the rear doors alone.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the current-generation HiAce LWB van with the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel and six-speed automatic, listed 2019–2024, at 8.2 L/100km combined. The LWB van automatic released in 2024 is listed at 7.9, the manual at 7.4, and the super-long-wheelbase automatic at 8.1. A loaded van uses noticeably more than an empty one, so budget on the high side if you carry heavy loads every day. The guide also lists a 3.5-litre petrol V6 HiAce van from 2019 at 12.0 L/100km, so check the fuel type on the listing.

Practical points

  • Seats: the standard LWB and SLWB vans have two seats. HiAce Crew Van versions have five; check the listing if you need to carry a crew.
  • Height: check clearance before entering underground or multi-level car parks.
  • Licence: VicRoads says a car licence covers vehicles of 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass (GVM) or less. The GVM is on the van's compliance plate. P-plates are accepted.
  • Not for rideshare: a two-seat panel van does not meet Uber's passenger seating requirements.

Renting one

Each HiAce listing shows the van's year, seats, weekly rent and bond. Pickup is from Dandenong South.

Do I need a special licence to drive a HiAce van?
