A small SUV for city use

The Yaris Cross is a small SUV based on the Yaris light car. It is short enough to park easily in Footscray or Fitzroy, but the raised seating and hatchback make loading and getting in easier than a low small car. For a couple, a single parent with one child, or a driver doing short delivery runs, it covers daily needs without the running costs of a larger SUV.

Running costs

The Green Vehicle Guide lists the Yaris Cross hybrid with two-wheel drive at 3.8 L/100km combined and the all-wheel-drive hybrid at 4.0. The guide lists the petrol-only Yaris Cross at 5.4 L/100km, which shows how much of the saving comes from the hybrid system. Real-world use depends on how you drive.

Practical points

  • Size: it seats five, but the rear seat is compact. Two adults in the back is comfortable on short trips; three is a squeeze.
  • Engine: the three-cylinder petrol engine can sound busier than a four-cylinder when it starts up under hard acceleration. That is normal for this car.
  • AWD: some versions drive all four wheels. That helps in slippery conditions but is not needed for normal city driving, and the Green Vehicle Guide rates the AWD slightly higher on fuel.

Renting one

The cars listed below each show the year, weekly rent and bond. P-plates are accepted. Pickup is from Dandenong South.

Renting a Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid: questions

How economical is the Yaris Cross Hybrid?

The Green Vehicle Guide rates the 2WD hybrid at 3.8 L/100km combined and the AWD hybrid at 4.0 L/100km, against 5.4 for the petrol-only version.

Is the Yaris Cross big enough for a family?

It seats five, but the rear seat and cargo area are compact. It suits a couple or a small family; for more room look at the Corolla Cross Hybrid or Kluger Hybrid.

Is the Yaris Cross Hybrid suitable for Uber?

That depends on the car and on Uber's current rules. Uber's Melbourne UberX requirements include an ANCAP 5-star rating, four doors, seating for four passengers and a maximum age of 15 years by year of manufacture. Passengers may find the rear seat tight on longer trips.
