Day Trips From Melbourne by Car, Starting in the South-East
From Dandenong South the best day trips by car are to the south and east: the Dandenong Ranges in about 30 minutes, the Mornington Peninsula in under an hour, Phillip Island in about 90 minutes and Wilsons Prom in under three hours.
The best day trips from Melbourne by car, if you live in the south-east, are the ones to the south and east. From Dandenong South the Dandenong Ranges are about 30 minutes away, Mornington about 35 minutes, Phillip Island about an hour and a half, and Wilsons Promontory under three hours, all without traffic. Trips to the west, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians, are longer from here than from the city, and work better as overnight stays.
Most day-trip guides time everything from the CBD. This one starts where south-east families actually start, and covers the tolls, bookings and fuel stops for each trip.
Why plan from the south-east instead of the CBD?
Because the numbers change. These are approximate driving distances and times without traffic, from route planning on OpenStreetMap data in October 2026. Allow more on summer weekends and public holidays.
| Destination | From Dandenong South | From the Melbourne CBD | Day trip from the south-east? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belgrave (Dandenong Ranges) | about 27 km, 30 minutes | about 42 km, 45 minutes | Yes, easily |
| Olinda (Dandenong Ranges) | about 35 km, 35 minutes | – | Yes |
| Mornington | about 32 km, 35 minutes | – | Yes, even a half day |
| Sorrento | about 69 km, 1 hour 5 minutes | about 106 km, 1 hour 35 minutes | Yes |
| Cowes, Phillip Island | about 103 km, 1 hour 30 minutes | about 141 km, 2 hours | Yes |
| Penguin Parade, Phillip Island | about 108 km, 1 hour 35 minutes | – | Yes, with a late finish |
| Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory | about 186 km, 2 hours 40 minutes | about 224 km, 3 hours 5 minutes | Yes, with an early start |
| Torquay | about 140 km, 2 hours | about 103 km, 1 hour 30 minutes | Possible, but long |
| Apollo Bay | about 235 km, 3 hours 20 minutes | about 198 km, 2 hours 50 minutes | Better overnight |
| Halls Gap (Grampians) | about 290 km, 3 hours 45 minutes | about 252 km, 3 hours 15 minutes | Better overnight |
The pattern is simple. Everything south and east of us is closer than it is from the city, sometimes by 40 km each way. Everything west means crossing the whole city first.
Phillip Island and the penguins
Phillip Island is the classic south-east day trip, and from Dandenong South you don't need a freeway into the city at all. Head south-east on the South Gippsland Highway, join the Bass Highway, then cross the bridge at San Remo. It's about an hour and a half to Cowes without traffic.
The Penguin Parade is the reason most families go, and it needs planning:
- Book ahead. Phillip Island Nature Parks says bookings are essential.
- Prices when we checked: General Viewing was $34 for adults aged 16 and over, $17 for children aged 4 to 15, and $85 for a family of two adults and two children.
- Timing: the parade is in the evening and its time changes through the year, so check the current arrival time on the Nature Parks website. The visitor centre opens daily at 12pm.
- Parking on site is free.
- No photos are allowed during the parade itself.
Build the day backwards from the parade. Leave after lunch, spend the afternoon on the island, have an early dinner in Cowes, and get to the parade early. In summer that means a late drive home, so share the driving if you can. In a rental from us, only drivers we've approved in writing can take the wheel.
Mornington Peninsula beaches and hot springs
The Mornington Peninsula is the easiest day out from Dandenong South: Mornington itself is about 35 minutes away, and Sorrento about an hour. The quickest way down is Peninsula Link, a 27 km freeway from Carrum Downs to Mount Martha, and it is toll-free.
EastLink is a different road. It's a tollway that runs past Dandenong South and connects to Peninsula Link at its southern end, so a navigation app may send you that way. A weekday car trip on an EastLink account from the Dandenong Bypass down to Peninsula Link crosses three toll zones costing $0.80, $1.88 and $1.88 in 2026–27, about $4.56, while a trip pass costs a flat $8.05. You can avoid it altogether by heading down Frankston–Dandenong Road to Peninsula Link.
A sensible plan is to drive to the far end first and work back towards home: Sorrento and the Point Nepean end in the morning, before the bayside roads fill up, then Arthurs Seat and the hot springs in the afternoon, and dinner in Mornington, 35 minutes from home. The bay-side beaches are generally calmer than the ocean beaches facing Bass Strait, so swim on the bay side with young children, at a patrolled beach when one is open. Book the hot springs before you go on a summer weekend.
Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy
The Ranges are the closest escape of all: Belgrave is about 30 minutes from Dandenong South, and Olinda about 35. Don't mix up the names. Dandenong is the city centre in Melbourne's south-east; the Dandenong Ranges are the forested hills to the north-east, taking in Belgrave, Sassafras, Olinda and Kalorama.
Puffing Billy runs from Belgrave and operates daily except Christmas Day. Its own advice is blunt: journeys sell out well in advance, and every visitor must pre-book. Book the train first, then fit the rest of the day around its departure. A gentle loop by car takes in Sassafras for lunch and the gardens around Olinda in the afternoon, then down the mountain before dark.
The mountain roads wind and climb quickly, and cloud can sit on the higher sections. Turn your headlights on in fog or rain, slow down before bends, and let faster traffic pass rather than speeding up.
Wilsons Promontory
The Prom is the longest day trip on this list that still works: about 2 hours 40 minutes to Tidal River from Dandenong South, against roughly 3 hours from the CBD. Parks Victoria describes the park as about three hours' drive from Melbourne. The round trip is about 370 km, so pick one area of the park rather than trying to see all of it.
Four things to check before you go:
- Fuel. Parks Victoria says there is no fuel at Tidal River and the closest fuel outlet is at Yanakie. Fill up before you enter the park.
- Park alerts. When we checked, Parks Victoria warned of traffic delays at the park entrance from 31 August to 20 November 2026 because of infrastructure works, and an aerial deer control operation from 19 to 21 October 2026 that closes several tracks and visitor areas.
- Wildlife. Parks Victoria asks visitors not to touch or approach sick or dead birds or other wildlife.
- Daylight. Leave the park in daylight. The roads in and out pass through open country where animals cross, especially around dusk.
Great Ocean Road and the Grampians: better as overnighters
Both are wonderful, and both are on the wrong side of Melbourne for a south-east day trip. Apollo Bay is about 3 hours 20 minutes from Dandenong South without traffic, so a there-and-back day along the coast means seven hours in the car before you stop anywhere. Halls Gap in the Grampians is about 3 hours 45 minutes each way.
Book a night and both become relaxed trips. The fastest routes west usually cross the city on CityLink, which is a toll road, so check your route with "avoid tolls" switched on and off before you leave, and arrange payment if you'll use it.
Which car suits a family day trip?
A day trip is mostly about people and gear: who's coming, and what goes in the boot.
| Your group | What fits | From our fleet, at the time of writing |
|---|---|---|
| Two adults, two kids, day bags | Any 5-seat car with a reasonable boot | Hybrids from roughly $220 a week |
| Up to seven people | A 7-seat SUV | 2026 Toyota Kluger Hybrid, $430 a week, $700 bond |
| Eight people, or seven plus prams and eskies | An 8-seat people mover | 2026 Kia Carnival 8-seaters, $430 to $560 a week |
With every seat in use, boot space shrinks fast in a 7-seater, so pack soft bags. Our guide to 7 and 8-seater family car rental covers luggage and seating in detail. If you need child seats, ask us when you request the car.
Be realistic about the rental terms, too. Our rentals have a one-month minimum, billed weekly. If you only need a car for one weekend, a daily rental company will suit you better. If you're settling into the south-east, or visitors are staying for a few weeks, a monthly rental covers every one of these trips. Browse our SUV and family cars or the Kia Carnival; rent and bond are shown on every listing.
Tolls, fuel and timing tips
- Tolls. The Phillip Island, Wilsons Prom and Dandenong Ranges trips need no toll roads. The Peninsula can be reached toll-free via Peninsula Link. Westward trips often use CityLink. In a rental car, EastLink's advice is to buy a trip pass before you travel, otherwise the toll will likely be charged to the rental company's account and passed on to you with extra fees.
- Fuel. A Penguin Parade round trip from Dandenong South is about 216 km. A car using 5 L/100 km burns about 11 litres for that; one using 9 L/100 km burns about 19. Our hybrid vs petrol running costs guide shows how to work out the difference.
- Timing. Leave early for anything popular in summer, and plan to be heading home before the Sunday afternoon rush back to Melbourne.
- Rules on the road. Country highways have their own risks: slow to 40 km/h past stopped emergency and roadside vehicles with flashing lights, and watch the limits through small towns. Our Victorian road rules guide covers the ones visitors miss.
What should you pack in the car?
A good day trip from the south-east usually means a couple of hours in the car each way, with long stretches between towns on the Prom and Phillip Island runs. Pack for that:
- Water and snacks for everyone, so you're not hunting for a shop with tired kids.
- Layers and a rain jacket. Coastal and hill weather can change quickly, even in summer.
- Sun protection: hats and sunscreen for beaches and walks with little shade.
- A phone charger for the car, and a downloaded map for areas with patchy coverage.
- A bag for wet or sandy things, to keep the seats clean. In a rental, cleaning beyond ordinary use can come out of the bond.
- Your booking confirmations, saved on your phone in case the signal drops at the gate.
Key point: book the fixed-time things first (the Penguin Parade, Puffing Billy, the hot springs), then plan the drive around them. The roads can't make up for a missed booking.
Our base is in Dandenong South, the same starting point as every drive time on this page. Pick a weekend, make the bookings, and the south-east's best days out are all within easy reach.
